Security Field Engineer
About Us:
AI needs a new infrastructure layer. We're building it at Modal.
Every era of computing brought new workloads that previous infrastructure couldn't support: mainframes, databases, and the cloud. Each time, the company that rebuilt the layer underneath defined the decade. AI is no different, except it touches everything instead of one slice, and the window to build the layer underneath it is open right now.
Our customers include category-defining companies like Lovable, Ramp, Cognition, DoorDash, and Suno. They rely on Modal for instant GPU access, sub-second container starts, and native storage, so it's simple to serve low-latency inference, fine-tune models, and access production-ready sandboxes at scale.
We recently raised a $355M Series C at a $4.65B valuation, led by General Catalyst and Redpoint Ventures. We've crossed $300M+ ARR and grown fivefold since September.
Our team includes creators of popular open-source projects (e.g.,Seaborn,Luigi), academic researchers, international olympiad medalists, and experienced engineering and product leaders with decades of experience.
The Role:
We’re looking for a Security Field Engineer to own how we represent and defend our security posture externally. This role sits at the intersection of security, engineering, and go-to-market, and is critical to building customer trust and accelerating deals.
You will work directly with customer security teams, translate our architecture and controls into clear, credible narratives, and ensure that what we present externally reflects how our systems actually operate.
This is a hands-on, technical role, not just documentation. You will identify patterns in customer requirements and drive improvements in both our product and security posture.
What You'll Do:
Customer Security Engagement
Lead technical security conversations with customers and prospects
Respond to security reviews, deep-dive calls, and architecture discussions
Clearly explain our systems, controls, and tradeoffs to sophisticated security teams
Deal Enablement & Trust
Partner with Sales and GTM to unblock deals and accelerate security approvals
Own responses to complex security questionnaires and RFPs
Build credibility with customer security stakeholders through clear, consistent communication
Security Representation
Own and evolve customer-facing security materials (trust center, whitepapers, architecture docs)
Ensure external messaging accurately reflects internal systems and controls
Continuously improve how we communicate security to reduce friction and ambiguity
Engineering Partnership
Identify recurring customer requirements and gaps in our security posture
Work with engineering to prioritize and implement meaningful improvements
Translate customer expectations into concrete, actionable technical changes
Tooling & Process
Improve how we handle inbound security reviews (automation, knowledge base, workflows)
Evaluate and implement tools to scale customer security interactions
Requirements:
Core Experience
Experience in security engineering, security GRC, or solutions engineering in a technical product company
Strong experience engaging with customer security teams or supporting enterprise sales
Technical Strength
Solid understanding of modern cloud architectures (AWS/GCP/Azure), APIs, and distributed systems
Ability to explain security controls (auth, isolation, encryption, logging, etc.) in real systems
Comfortable going deep with engineers and equally comfortable explaining concepts to customers
Execution & Ownership
Highly responsive and action-oriented—able to operate in deal-critical timelines
Identifies patterns and drives improvements, not just one-off answers
Strong written and verbal communication skills
